We Were Always Here: A Mexicn American's Odyssey

The Numbers

As much as they crow about shrinking the government, Trump and his South African hatchet man rarely mention a significant problem: the national debt.

Sometimes mistaken as a mere concept, it is an actual thing. It costs all of us real money. Barring a miracle, between the current fiscal year and 2030, the national debt is projected to rise by $14 trillion.

It would ascend from $23 trillion to $43 trillion in 2030. Is this part of MAGA?

With all the DOGE machete-wielding, the border has grown quiet. Or so it seems.

One mischaracterization needs to be clarified. The Border Patrol does not police ports of entry. Those are the domain of Customs and Border Enforcement. This agency gets little recognition, although a large percentage of undocumented migrants are smuggled through the ports.

Border security discussions usually are statistical sleight of hands. Success is derived from how many migrants are arrested.

Are there other migrants who succeed in traversing the border?

Yes.

Using Border Patrol stats, it’s apparent that an estimated 22 percent of migrants evade detection.

Then there are the “gotaways.” These are migrants that agents see but fail to apprehend them. In recent years, the number of “gotaways” has increased. For example, in fiscal year 2023, there were over 600,000 such cases. From 2021 to 2023, the total number of gotaways was over 1.6 million.
