A Story of Two Women Presidential Candidates
Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum became her party’s presidential candidate not quite a year ago. Every poll from the start to election day showed her with an expansive lead over her only serious rival, Xochtil Alvarez.
Sheinbaum is the first woman and Jew to serve as Mexico’s chief of state.
Her election undercuts Mexico’s macho image. Yes, machismo exists there as it does here. We prefer to call it a patriarchal society.
I spoke to many people during several trips to Mexico before the election. No one was bothered by her gender or ethnic background. On the contrary, they were viewed as positive attributes.
She is a lifelong leftist, as were her student-activist parents. It is evident in which direction she will lead the country.
Meanwhile, in the United States, a black woman is polling almost even with a crazy, mean old man. A survey of likely male voters showed that Trump had a sizable lead nationally, with 51 percent to 40 percent.
Mexico has experienced a political revolution that has yet to unfold fully.
