Getting Away with Murder in the U.S.

I have lost count of how many times people have told me they are afraid of visiting Mexico. Typically, they say nacos might murder them.

Somehow, my family and I have dodged such violence during our many holidays in Mexico. We have always felt safe and at home.

I wonder how many Americans know this: only 54 percent of homicides in the United States are cleared. That’s a decline from previous years. It’s sobering to realize that killers have a good chance of escaping arrest.
