Mexicans will elect Claudia Sheinbaum in Sunday’s presidential election. In the run-up to the election, American political pundits and the American media are peddling a distorted narrative. It ignores what sort of governments Mexico endured for 90 years before the election of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, popularly known as AMLO.
The truth is Mexico is a nascent democracy. It is still beset by endemic violence and some degree of impunity.
But what the narrative ignores is what came before: massive corruption, the long chain of economic crises and naked authoritarianism.
Take this as just the tip of the iceberg: Former Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto accepted a $100m (£77m) bribe from drug cartel kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, a witness has testified.
Alex Cifuentes, who says he was a close associate of Guzmán for years, told a New York City courtroom that he had told authorities of the bribe in 2016.
With Sheinbaum as president, Mexico will continue its long road to democracy and stability.
